Summary of 1 & 2 Thessalonians
1 Thessalonians 4:16
Bahan Alkitab: Colossians
Colossians is also written by Apostle Paul in his imprisonment in Rome. He wrote Ephesians, Philippians ,Philemon and Colossians during Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome.
Background of Colossians Church , It is about 100 miles of Ephesus, the Gospel was proclaimed by Paul in Ephesus and Epaphras who listened and became a believer brought it to Colossae. He played the major role in the evangelism and growth of the Colossians.Epaphras either visited Paul in prison or was imprisoned with him and reported on conditions in Colossians Church.
The purpose to write this letter ( often always the case of Paul’s others letter ) like Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesus and Philippians ,to teach young Christians to grow in the right doctrine of the Gospel.
Paul emphasized on these 3 main points in its letter to Colossians:
1. The Supremacy of Jesus Christ.
2. Beware of false teachings.
3. As Christians we need to grow in the Word of God.
Who is Jesus Christ?
1. He is the creator of all creation .( Col 1:16)
Everything is created by Him, through Him and for Him.
2. He is the image of God . He is God .(Col1:15, John 1:1-2, 14)
No one has seen God . The Word became flesh and God dwelt among us ,this is in Jesus Christ who came into this World in bodily form.
3. He is the head of the Church.(Col1:18).
Not the pope. That is why the highest authority of the Church is The Scriptures. Sola Scriptura. God special revelation to us is already written in the Bible now. Jesus has ascended to Heaven and God’s word is given to us in the written Bible . 2Timothy3:16.
4. He is The Redeemer. (Col 1:20-22)
He reconcile all things to Himself ,having made peace through the blood of His cross. He sacrifice Himself so we do not have to be punished ,His death substitute our death. When we come to trust in Him, our sins are forgiven and He imputed His righteousness to us who believe in Jesus Christ. So now we can be in peace for we have received forgiveness of our sins and we are reconciled to God . We were His enemy (Col1:21),were alienated and hostile in mind, we engaged in evil deeds. All these is solely the work of Jesus Christ, nothing else. We cannot be justified by doing the laws. Galatians 2:16.
Therefore , Christians should not listen to the false teachings that is not according to The Gospel. For examples:
1.Following all religious festival (Col 2:16,17)(numbers 28:11-14)
2. Only consume permissible food and drinks.
3. Did circumcision according to Jewish Law.
4. Asceticism (Col 2:21)
5. Angel worship (Col2:18)
6. Reliance of human wisdom and tradition.
Having made peace through the blood of His Cross:
Before Christ After Christ:
-Hostile in mind -Blameless
-Engaged in evil deeds
How should we live now after union with Christ?
Children , Obey your parents in all things.
Let us discuss:
1. Who is the most important person in your life?
2. How is He/She compare to Jesus Christ?
3. Would you like to know more about Christ?
And he is the image of the invisible God, the first -born of all creation.
Bahan Alkitab: Philippians 1-4
Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, Rejoice.
Bahan Alkitab: Galatians
Author: Apostle Paul
Audience: churches in the southern area of the Roman province of Galatia (Antioch, Iconium, Lystra and Derbe) that Paul had founded in his first missionary journey.
When: between 48 and 49 or between 51 and 53
· To resist false teachers (Judaizers’ teaching) that believed a number of the ceremonial practices of the Old Testament (especially circumcision) were still binding on the New Testament church.
· To establish his apostolic authority. The Judaizers argued that Paul was not an authentic apostle and that out of a desire to make the gospel more appealing to Gentiles he had removed from the gospel certain legal requirements.
The Judaism teachers claim that we cannot be saved by only believing in Christ but must carry out the Torah laws. Why do they add the law as requirement for salvation?
– To the followers of Judaism teaching, for one to be saved, he must carry out the Jewish law and adhere to the Jewish rites and tradition, such as Sabbath, circumcision, and other 613 commandments in the Torah. The main thing is to carry out the law, without that then you can’t be saved.
– They are very proud of the Torah because it is from God Himself, other nations do not have the Torah, so they regard themselves very special.
However, this is a wrong teaching. It is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone that man is justified, nothing else and nothing more.
The word justified means “pronounced or treated as righteous”. If you are ‘justified’ means God declares you as ‘righteous’ and forgives your sin, so you will not be punished because of your sin.
Let me give you an illustration. Let’s say I am arrested by the police and charged with a crime. I am brought to a trial and the judge pronounces me ‘guilty as charged’. Because of this verdict, I am punished with 10 years of prison time. Like this situation, we are all born into the world with sinful natures, due to the sin of Adam. Our status is sinful, and the punishment is eternal death.
Back to my crime illustration, in order for me to be freed from the jail punishment, I need to get a very good lawyer to gather strong evidences to prove that I did not commit the crime and clear the ‘guilty’ status. But for our sinful status, the only way to clear the sinful status is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ:
– By grace means it is given by God, not something we can get ourselves
– Through faith in Jesus Christ means by believing in Jesus Christ as our Saviour.
Why only through Jesus Christ? Because Jesus Christ is the only person whose sacrifice can satisfy God. Christ died in punishment of our sins. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross covered our sins and took away our sins so that when God sees us, He no longer sees our sins but the blood of Jesus that cleansed our sins. God’s anger is turned away and He declares our status as ‘righteous’ and we no longer be punished.
There is no ritual, no sacrament, no works that can make us worthy of God’s gift of salvation.
Galatians 2:15-16 – We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
In the book of Ephesians, Apostle Paul also repeated the same: Ephesians 2:8-9 – For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Talking about carrying out the Torah commandments, the only person who can fulfil the law completely is Jesus Christ. There’s no way we can perform all the commandments. Who among you can say that you love and worship only one God? That there’s not even a single moment that you do not think God as the most important? That you never lie? That you never have a bad intention or bad thoughts in your mind? That you never feel jealous of your friends? I think none of the human beings can be 100% perfect like that, except Jesus Christ.
When we believe in Christ, Christ dwell in our hearts and we live in Christ through faith. Because we are in Christ, we are saved although we cannot fulfil the law. The law does not bind us anymore, because the work of Christ to save us is complete, 100% complete.
When we believe in Christ, we have a new life. The Holy Spirit comes to live within us and enable us to bear good fruits. How do we live out our faith? How do we show up as followers of Christ? By becoming more like Jesus in the ways we think and behave, according to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, rather than behave according to sinful desires. Galatians 5:22-23 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
We do good works as the fruit of our repentance and our new life in Christ. Good fruit are produced from good tree. John 15:5 – I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
This is the difference between Christianity and other religions. Followers of other religions do good works as requirements to be saved. Followers of Christ do good works as a result of new life in Christ!
Do not take salvation for granted. Galatians 6:7 – Do not be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
Galatians 6:9-10 – And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, gas we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
Application / Group Discussion:
– What does it mean that we are made righteous by grace through faith in Jesus Christ?
– Give one or two examples of how you live out your faith by demonstrating the fruit of the holy spirit.
We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

Who is Paul
Born as a Jewish
Raised as a Pharisee
A Roman citizen
Educated in Greek
By God’s Grace become a Christian
13 books written by Paul:
How do we know these books are written by Paul?
Paul ‘s unique style of writing.
He begins his letter by introducing himself as an Apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God.
1 Timothy 1:1
-Always pray for his readers
-Teaching them doctrines about :
1. Faith 2. Christ 3.Salvation
-Encouraging and mentoring his younger disciples like Timothy, Titus and Onesimus.
Why is it important for the Church to know Doctrines:
1. Church is built by Jesus Christ
2. Church is built on the teaching of the Apostles and Prophets.
3. Church is always attack by False teachings.
a. from inside church -heretic
b. from outside church-philosophy
Example of heretic:
There is only 1 Gospel in Jesus Christ
Justification by Faith alone in Jesus Christ.not required circumcision and obedience to the whole law as a means of justification before God.One is not saved by works.
Example of philosophy :
Gnosticism – was influenced by Greek Philosophy which taught the body was evil and the spirit was good.
Therefore they say Christ cannot be God since he came in a human body.
1 John 4:2-3
But every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God, and this is the spirit of antichrist which you have heard is coming and now is already in the world.
Paul also emphasize all christians to know the words as it is written in
2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching ,for reproof for correction for training in righteousness.
Paul is the greatest missionary ,he wrote in Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the Gospel for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes to the Jews first and also to the Greek.
Paul also believes in predestination.
Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world that we should be holy and blameless before him in love
He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ according to the purpose of His will.
Another important teaching of Salvation is BY Grace Alone
For by Grace you have been saved thriugh faith .And this is not our own doing .It is the gift of God.
9 Not a result of works so that no one may boast.
Not only Doctrinal , Paul also encourage his co-workers for example
1 Corinthians 15:33
Bad companies ruins good morals
2 Corinthians 5:7
We walk by faith ,not by sight.
Now that Jesus Christ is no longer in this world, His words has to be passed down to people after us.
Paul has spread the Gospel to Europe, Turkey and Asia so that we can listen to the Gospel, we should follow His example ,there are many people who do not know The Gospel.
1. Who inspired Paul to write all His letters?
2. Why did Paul call himself an Apostle of Christ when he was not ministering together with Jesus Christ?
3. Can you name at least 1 important message in Paul’s letter ? hiny Doctrine ?teaching about …..
2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching ,for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.
Bahan Alkitab: The Bible is God’s story of salvation from Genesis to Revelation. God reveals his redemptive plan to save his people through Jesus in both the Old and New Testaments.
Review Genesis to Romans (P5-P6, 30 Aug 2020)
Our history begins with God creating the universe and everything in it. God is the beginning of everything. God existed before anything else. God created everything out of nothing according to his plan. God is the Creator.
Question: How do you understand that God created the universe and everything in it?
Answer: By faith. You can’t see for yourself that God created everything in the beginning but you believe that. Hebrews 11:1 – Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
God created man and woman as unique beings, gave them a unique task, and established a unique relationship with them. But then man rebelled against God, man sinned against God.
Question: How did sin start?
Answer: sinful behaviour begins with failure to trust God. Yes, there was a temptation from satan, but if Adam and Eve stood firm in their faith and trusted God no matter what others said, they would not sin. They failed to trust God and trusted satan’s word instead.
Question: What’s the impact of sin?
Answer: sin affected our relationship with God, others, and creation. We no longer regard God is our Lord, we no longer regard God as the most important, we no longer live a God-centred life but self-centred life. We no longer have close relationship with God. Instead of worshipping God, we worship other things, we even worship created things. We regard created things as more important than God. We do not care for others and only care about ourselves, again, self-centred live. We do not take care the creation, but we exploit them for our pleasure, for our benefits. Sin affected all aspects of our lives.
When Adam and Eve sinned, God judged them but promised to send a Saviour.
Genesis 3:15 – I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.
Man cannot solve the problem of sin by themselves. They cannot save themselves from the wrath of God. Only God has the solution for sin, that is through Jesus Christ, the Saviour.
As descendants of Adam and Eve, we were born with a sinful nature. Throughout the history of mankind, we see clear evidence that man cannot break free from the bondage of sin by their own power, sin continues to escalate since the fall of Adam and Eve.
God is perfectly just and judges wickedness, but that He shows grace and mercy to His people. God chose His people. God chose Noah and his family. God called Abraham and gave him faith to believe His promises. God chose deceitful Jacob to inherit God’s promises and changed his heart. God chose the Israelites to be His people. He redeemed His people, the Israelites, from slavery in Egypt. He gave His people His law. God’s law serves as the identity that differentiate God’s people from others.
God’s law shows that God is 100% holy, God is 100% righteous, God is 100% good. As God’s people, He demands us to be holy, to be righteous, to be good. However, with our sinful nature, we can’t live a holy life, we can’t be righteous, we can’t be good, let alone to be 100% righteous and good! So, does that mean we can’t be God’s people because we can’t fulfil God’s law?
But thanks be to God that He has chosen us to be His people. Thanks be to God that He sent Jesus to become a man and the promised Messiah. We belong to God, Jesus bought us back (redemption) with His sacrifice (atonement). He covers our sins and take away our sins (expiation) so we can return to God. The result of Christ’s work of expiation is propitiation – God’s anger is turned away, we are restored into fellowship with Him.
So now we return to God, we are justified before God, we are made righteous before God, however, we are still living in the fallen, sinful world. If we are not careful, we can be pulled into the sinful world. Apostle Paul warned us in Romans 12:2 – Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Do not be conformed to this world means do not follow the way of this world.
Be transformed by the renewal of your mind: how can we be transformed? How can our mind be renewed? Answer: 1. by always remember that Christ bought us back with a high price, that He gave Himself for us. 2. by learning and practising his Word, the Bible. 3. by listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit, who stays in our heart the moment we believe in Christ.
We will surely go through testing, to refine and purify our faith. Through testing we will learn to follow the will of God, we will learn what is acceptable and perfect to God.
So, the Bible is God’s story of His redemption plan. Since the beginning (that is in Genesis), God had revealed his redemption plan because man will not be able to save themselves from the wrath of God. God showed his mercy by sending a Saviour to redeem a people for himself. 1 Peter 2:9 – But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
God is faithful to his promises, and God holds us responsible for keeping His covenant.
Application / Group Discussion:
• Sinful behaviour begins with failure to trust God. How do you grow in trusting God?
• How do you resist temptation?
• List down the marks of the true Christian (Romans 12:9-21). Give an example how you would obey these commands by doing things differently from the worldly view.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
