One day Jesus walked up to the mountain side and sat down, he was teaching out on a hillside. We call his lesson that day The Sermon on the Mount. “You have heard that you should love your neighbours and hate your enemies,” Jesus said. “But I say, love your enemies — and pray for those who persecute you.” Jesus was telling his followers to love those peoples who don’t love them. if someone does mean and hateful things to you, pray for them.
It was when we were still God’s enemies that He demonstrated His love for us. Through Jesus (Romans 5:8) God’s love brought salvation to us. God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. When Jesus was on the cross dying, the pharisees and the guards were mocking Jesus. Jesus never did anything wrong, yet there he was on the cross, not for His sins but for all of our sins. He never said anything hateful back. He said, “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” Jesus just prayed to his father and asked for them to be forgiven. What an example for us! Jesus the son of God already came and He did it. Jesus is the reason we can be forgiven and he is the reason we can forgive others. Jesus loved those who were crucifying Him. And He loves us. Now we are no longer God’s enemies, we are children of God.
Jesus said that He would give us the Holy Spirit to help us to respond with love not with hate or anger, but we pray and ask God to give us strength and power to forgive others who mean to us. Like how God forgave us. Only when God puts his love in our heart, we can obey God to love our enemies just like the way Jesus taught us.
How to love our enemies?
1. Pray for them. Pray to God to change their heart. Praying changes our hearts too.
2. Forgive them. We asked God to help us to put his kindness, tender hearted, forgiveness in our heart. He will
give us the strength to forgive.
3. Never talk badly or revenge towards them and show kindness, demonstrate God’s love to others, be an
example for others as children of God.
4. Teach them about Jesus that God taught us to love our enemies, even when your enemies don’t love us. Jesus
loved us so much that he sacrificed himself for our sins.
