Lesson Focus:
• Learn to trust GOD in times of trouble.

Now the Philistines – Israelites’ enemy, gathered their soldiers/armies for battle and were ready to fight the Israel soldiers. King Saul and his soldiers encamped at the other side – there was a valley between them.
Philistines sent out Goliath, the very tall and strong soldier and he wore the bronze helmet and heavy armour and carried a sword and a spear. Goliath shouted: ‘Send out your best man to fight me! If he kills me, we will become Israelites’ servants but if I kill him, you will become the Philistines’ servants!’.

When King Saul and the Israelites heard this, they were so afraid. They did not have anyone who is big enough and strong enough to fight Goliath. So, that Goliath kept shouting and asking anyone from the Israelites to fight him, every morning and evening for 40 days.

One day, David’s father, Jesse asked David to bring some food for his brothers, who were King Saul’s soldiers. They had not come back as they were still at the battlefield. So, David obeyed his father and left his sheep to a keeper and left to see his brothers.

David walked and finally arrived, then he heard Goliath shouted again. David said, ‘Who is that man? How dare he speak out against the armies of the Living GOD!’ But his eldest brother, Eliab scolded David why he came, he should just take care of his few sheep.

When the words that David spoke, heard by King Saul, he called David. Then David told him: ‘Don’t worry! I will go and fight him!’ The King said you can’t, you are too young and Goliath has been a warrior/soldier for years.
David answered: I have taken care of my father’s sheep for a long time. When a lion or a bear came and wanted to eat the sheep, I fought, struck them and delivered the sheep out from the lion/bear’s mouth then I killed them. This Goliath shall be as one of the lions or the bears. The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine who mocked the army of the Living GOD!

Then King Saul agreed to let David fight Goliath then said, Go and the LORD be with you! He put the armour to David but it was too heavy for him so he took them off. David just brought his shepherd’s staff, his sling and 5 smooth stones and put in his pouch.

The Philistines came forward and came near to David, then they laughed and mocked him, you came with a stick to fight Goliath? David was not afraid and he said: you came to me with a sword and a spear, but I come to you in the name of the LORD, The GOD of the armies of Israel! The battle is the LORD’s and HE will give you into our hand!
Goliath moved closer to attack David, but David quickly ran out to meet him, putting one stone to his sling, he swung it around with great force and let it go. The stone hit Goliath in his forehead and he fell on his face to the ground and died.

When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they turned and ran away in fear. Now everyone knew that God was with David. He had trusted God and God had given him all he needed to deliver God’s people from their enemies.

God used David to deliver Israelites from their enemies. Many years later, God sent Jesus, the promised Saviour, to deliver His people from their enemy, Satan by dying on the cross for our sins. Jesus is our King, who rules over the world and Satan, He will defend us.

Lesson learnt/summary:
• David knew whom he trusted, the Living God, who always was with him, protected him and taken care of him.
• God had always delivered him from the danger of the lion or the bear and he trusted God that He would also help him to defeat Goliath – the man who mocked God’s people.
• The GOD who David believed in, is the same GOD that we believe and trust now. He is bigger than our problems or difficulties. We can always trust in Him and depend on Him!
• How can we know our God then? We must always read and learn His word and pray!
• God always keeps His promises, is always with us, always helps and protects us!
