LESSON FOCUS: Jesus chose to obey the will of his Father so that we could be forgiven

After the Passover meal was over, Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives and His disciples followed Him. When they reached the garden, Jesus asked His disciples to pray while He went a short distance away to pray alone. Jesus knelt down to pray to His father. His heart was fill with sadness. He knew that that God has sent him into the world to suffer and die for the sins of God’s people. He says, ”Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” While he was praying, an angel appeared, strengthening him.
After a time, Jesus walked over to his disciples. They were so tired and sad they had fallen asleep. “Why are you sleeping?” Jesus asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
Just then Judas Iscariot arrived with a crowd of people, carrying swords and clubs. Judas came to Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” When the disciples saw that Jesus was going to be arrested, one of them picked up a sword and cut off a man’s ear. But Jesus stopped him and healed the man. Then Jesus said to all of them, ”Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me like you would a robber? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple, yet you did not arrest me. But this is your hour and the power of darkness.” Jesus was arrested and all His disciples fled and left Him
Jesus is God, so He could have easily stopped the officers from arresting Him but He allowed them to arrest Him. Why did Jesus do this? Because Jesus knew that this was part of God’s plan for Him to become our Savior. Jesus knew that the time has come for Him to die on the cross. It was a very hard time for Jesus, so He prayed to His Father. He asked if God could take this suffering away, but He would obey God’s will, not His will. Jesus chose to obey the will of His Father so that we could be forgiven.
Jesus can obey God the Father perfectly, but we as a sinner, are not capable of doing that. We have to ask God to give us strength so we can obey Him. We have to give thanks to Jesus for obeying his Father to save us. We have to pray everyday and read the Bible so that we know who our God is, what God’s will is for us and how to have a relationship with God.

05/04/2020 – Petrus menyangkal Yesus

Bahan Alkitab: John 13 & 18

Kategori: sm-sore-p12

Ringkasan:

It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant

Lesson focus
Jesus chose to obey the will of his Father so that we could be forgiven.

Bible story
After the last supper, Jesus and his 11 disciples took a walk to Mount Olives. Jesus wanted to spend time to pray to his Father. When they reached the Garden of Gethsemane, he said to them : “Pray that you may not enter into temptation. “ ( Luke 22 : 40 )

Jesus went away to pray to his Father. His heart was filled with sadness. Jesus knew that his Father sent him to this world to suffer and die for the sins of God’s people.
Jesus knelt down and pray : “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but Yours, be done. “ ( Luke 22:42 )
Even if he was afraid, he still submitted to His Father’s will. Jesus chose to obey God’s plan for him. He would go to the cross and bear the punishment for our sin. While Jesus was praying, an angel from heaven came to give him strength.

After a while, Jesus rose from prayer and found the disciples were sleeping. He said to them : “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation. ”
Just then, Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, arrived. A crowd of people carrying swords and clubs followed him. Judas came forward to Jesus and kissed Jesus. This was a signal to the guards of the temple to arrest Jesus. Jesus said : “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss? ”
When the disciples saw Jesus was arrested, one of them pulled up a sword and cut off the servant of the high priest’s right ear. “No more of this!” Jesus said. Then Jesus made the disciple put the sword away and healed the servant.
Jesus knew that this was the way to become our savior. So the Son of God did not stop Judas and the crowd of enemies. Jesus quietly allowed the guards to arrest and take him to the house of the higher priest. Jesus chose to obey his Father in heaven so that we could be forgiven through his sacrifice.

Lesson summary

1. Jesus chose to obey his Father, He agreed to die on the cross so that our sins can be forgiven.
2. Jesus is God, so he could have easily stopped the guards to arrest Him. But Jesus allowed the men to take him away because Jesus knew that this was part of God’s plan for him to become our savior.
3. Who is supposed to be punished and die on the cross?
Us, sinners! But Jesus sacrificed himself to replace us, because he loves us.

Ayat Hafalan:

While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Roman 5 : 8b

Affective: We need to pray and ask God’s help to be able to love God.
Psychomotor: Children be humble and depend on God’s strength in everything they do. E.g do not show off, God’s word is the final say not my desire, praise God instead of myself.
II.
Cognitive: Peter learnt that to be great in God’s kingdom is to serve. Jesus called and used him in ministry after he returned.
Affective: A. Children are grateful that God accepts every person who repents and returns to Him.
Psychomotor: Children want to repent from sins and share God’s love to others.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
Background of story: On the last supper where Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, He taught them about serving one another, yet later they’re having argument about “Who is the greatest?”
Many people like to be the greatest and even tried many ways to achieve things that other people have not/could not do in order to break a world record. Is that wrong to be great? What bible teach us about to be great in God’s kingdom?

I.
Peter and other disciples dispute about who is the greatest (Luk 22:24). They want to be greatest in God’s kingdom. But Jesus taught them the concept of greatness in God’s kingdom is to serve others (Luk 22:26). Do they understand? They don’t. Especially Peter.
Jesus who knew Peter’s heart and what will happen to him, warned him that Satan wanted to test and ruin him (Luk 22:31). But Peter replied that even all other disciple fall away he will not, he will follow Jesus and is ready to go to prison even to death. Peter might think that Jesus will praise him, but Jesus then foretold his denials.
Again, in Gethsemane, Jesus warned Peter to watch and pray that he will not fall into temptation (Mark 14:37-38) Did he pray? He did not.
Peter who is one of the closest disciples to Jesus, has seen, knew and learnt a lot, yet failed to be faithful. (Luk 22:54-62). When he followed at a distance to see the end, being asked if he is a follower of Jesus, he denied, cursed and then swore that he never knew Jesus.
Here we learn to be careful of standard of greatness in this sinful world. Many people desire to be big, famous or different from others which they want to praise themselves instead of God. We must be humble and be careful of this temptation. We should always seek God’s strength and help everyday so that we can be faithful and obedient to Him.
Instead of thinking that we have abilities to be great, we must thank God for everything we can do today, even the simplest thing, not forgetting that it is because of God’s blessing on us. E.g. Do not show off, obey God’s word instead of our own desire.

II.
Luk 22:61-62 Jesus looked at Peter, this made him aware of his failure. He wept bitterly. One look from Christ melted him into tears of godly sorrow for sin. God grace had made him repent from his sin.
Read Luk 22:32, John 21:15-19. After Jesus’ resurrection, He met Peter and then called him to do God’s work, to be His witness, to serve others and lead others to Jesus. This is the greatness in God’s kingdom.
“Do you love me more than these?” the questions that Peter must now answer carefully. Now Peter understands that loving God is serving others and doing His works, rather than seeking self-accomplishment. Thus, the greatness of God will be revealed.
Thank God for His grace and love for redeeming Peter and accepting him back. Today Jesus will also accept us when we sincerely repent. Like Jesus entrusted Peter to serve God again, He also wants us to serve in God’s kingdom to bring more people back to God.
If you want to be great in God’s kingdom, learn to be the servant of all.
Are you willing to serve God?
Reflections:
1. In what ways do I show my own greatness rather than glorifying God?
2. What should I do as a servant of God?

Ringkasan:

God’s creation was good but when sin enter the world all the creations lost it’s original function and purposes, it includes man. This sin has impacted the mind, heart and will of man. If a machine is spoiled, we can asked mechanic to repair, if a shirt is dirty, we can washed it. But who can fix man’s mind, heart and will?

Our mind, heart and will has been corrupted by sin.

Peter is the oldest among the disciples and he has chance to see Jesus’ transfiguration.
During the last supper, Jesus told the disciple that they will leave Him tonight but Peter confidently said though the rest will, he won’t. But when the high priest questioned Jesus, Peter denied Jesus 3 times before the rooster crowed. Peter regretted that and wept bitterly.

When Jesus showed Himself to the disciples, He asked Peter 3 times whether he loves Him. Peter answered Him that he loves Jesus. Jesus asked him to feed and tend His sheep.

From the lesson, children learn that:
1. We can not obey and follow Jesus with our own abilities as our mind, heart and will has been corrupted by sin
2. Peter sinned against God and repent
3. Jesus forgive Peter and accepted him back. He even entrusted Peter with His sheep
4. Peter loves Jesus and willingly serve Him till he died
